In late 1944, the anti-Hitler coalition expanded because the United Nations were joined by Europe’s liberated countries, the defeated satellites of Germany, Turkey, Saudi Arabia as well as South American states and other countries.

In December 1944, German troops engaged in a mighty offensive with the Anglo-American troops at Ardennes. On January 6, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill asked the Soviet government for assistance. True to the allied commitments, the U.S.S.R. came to the rescue of the United States and Great Britain, starting a regular offensive on the Eastern Front two weeks prior to the previously planned date.

At the final stage of the battle, soldiers from Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria – former satellites of Nazi Germany – fought together with the Red Army.
