Throughout the war, the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition rendered each other considerable economic aid. The United States provided the most assistance to the anti-Nazi bloc states as part of the state program of lend-lease, in line with which the allies received - mainly free of cost - ammunition, hardware, food and strategic raw materials.

The overall cost of American lend-lease supplies was about $50.1 billion, out of which $31.4 billion went to Great Britain, $11.3 billion to the Soviet Union, $3.2 billion to France and $1.6 billion to China. Supplies of allies to the United States totaled $7.8 billion, of which $6.8 billion went to Great Britain and the Commonwealth nations.

As part of the lend-lease program, the U.S.S.R. received:

Aircraft 22,150

Tanks 12,700

Compact SUVs 51,503

Trucks 375,883

Assistance from Western allies was delivered to the U.S.S.R. via the Pacific Ocean, Iran and Arctic convoys. The North Atlantic route was the most dangerous, as the convoys’ route was near occupied Norway, near German aviation and naval bases, and also due to bad weather dominating in those waters. Russia treats with deep respect the memory of the British and American pilots and sailors who died during enemy attacks on Allied convoys.

“Your decision, Mr. President, to grant the Soviet Union a $1 billion interest-free loan to pay for military equipment and raw materials supplies was accepted by the Soviet government with cordial gratitude as vitally important assistance to the Soviet Union in its great and painful fight against the common enemy – the bloody Hitlerism…”

(from Stalin’s letter to Roosevelt, 1942)
