For courage and valor displayed on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, more than 100,000 Kyrgyz warriors were awarded with orders and medals, 72 were given the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union, 21 were given the Order of Glory of 3 grades. Kyrgyzstan mobilized 363,000 people to the Red Army, which means each fourth national of the small republic headed to the front.

Located far from the front, Kyrgyzstan took an active part in the common fight against the enemy from the first days of the Great Patriotic War. Mobilization for the armed forces was held. In July-September 1941, some 14,000 people received military training, which made it possible to form the 385th Rifle Division, three rifle brigades, three separate assault rifle battalions.

The most prominent formation was the 316th Rifle Division of Major General Ivan Panfilov that showed true heroism during the defense of Moscow. Cholponbai Tuleberdiyev gained glory throughout the Soviet Union on August 6, 1942, when he covered the enemy embrasure with his body.

Artillerist Dair Asanov fought with selfless courage in the Battle of Stalingrad. During the four hours of the battle, he destroyed 8 tanks, 6 armored vehicles and up to 40 Nazi soldiers, and was awarded the gold medal of Hero of the Soviet Union.

During the forcing of the Dnieper, the natives of the Osh Region – Mamasaly Teshebayev and Tashmamat Dzhumabayev – distinguished themselves and were also awarded this honorary title.

In Belarus, Osmon Zhakypov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously, while Rozy Azimov returned to his native Jalalabad with a gold star on his chest.

Hero of the Soviet Union Samat Sadykov, born in the Leilek District, died on Berlin’s streets eight days before the victory. Senior Sergeant Mikhail Badigin, awarded with three Orders of Glory, went from Stalingrad to Berlin. Abdurashid Parpiyev was also awarded with three Orders of Glory for combat merits.

The first Kyrgyz scientist, candidate of biological science Jamil Cholponkulov, graduate of the Leningrad University, bravely fought in the battles of Stalingrad. Southern Kyrgyz natives Zhusubali Rustamov, Matkurban Yunusaliyev, Abdurasul Abdugaparov and others defended Leningrad.

Many cultural figures took part in defending the Motherland. People’s poet of Kyrgyzstan late Temirkul Umetaliyev, people’s writers and poets Dzhunai Mavlyanov, Sooronbai Dzhusuyev, Suyunbai Eraliyev as well as well-known conductor Asankhan Dzhumakmatov were awarded with orders and medals.

More than 100,000 Kyrgyz soldiers were awarded with orders and medals for courage and valor displayed on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, 72 were given the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 21 soldiers were awarded with the Order of Glory of 3 grades.

By the start of the Second World War, Kyrgyzstan was a small republic in terms of population. But its sons, the descendants of legendary Manas, showed themselves worthy warriors and made their invaluable contribution to the Victory over Nazi Germany.
